Whitehorse, Yukon – On the eve of Poverty and Homelessness Week, and the Yukon Anti-Poverty Coalition’s 30 year celebration today, YAPC is asking everyone to reflect on issues that were raised during last year’s Poverty and Homelessness Accountability week.
“We hear over and over again about the ways governments and community can and should be working together on issues that affect us all,” says YAPC Executive Director, Kristina Craig. “Key issues with solutions include: affordable housing, access to basic services, improved support for single people, accessible transit, truth and reconciliation support, inclusive decision-making, support for new immigrants, and increased support for food and heating programs.”
Pragmatic solutions can be found across the community in recommendations from frameworks like “A Place to Be”, in teams of frontline workers, with people who have lived experience, and at policy and decision making tables of all levels of governments.
“Poverty and homelessness are not just issues of scarcity—they are issues of equality and human dignity,” adds Craig. “Government and community accountability are the cornerstone of meaningful progress in combating these challenges. The PHAW calendar this year reflects that we all have a role to play.”
Members of the public are encouraged to attend the 30 year celebration on Thursday, October 15th and the PHAW launch on Monday, October 19th at 11 am at the park at the end of Hanson Street. Other actions and events are highlighted in the calendar.
